I love a good before / after photo but especially when it looks like this! For 14 years we have been working hard in so many ways but especially with our land which is inhabited by critically endangered species like monkeys, mangroves, insects, trees, and others I haven't learned about but lets celebrate the positive change here - TREES! Then of course there are all the little things you can't see from this birds eye view like birds, monkeys, butterflies, snakes, bugs, cute little ground dwellers like ñeques (they are truly adorable), anteaters, opossum, and coati. At times we even get predator cats like jaguar, jagarundi and ocelot.
Did you know nature has protective rights in Panama? It is one of too few countries around the world that have adopted ecocentric laws to protect nature which is a huge win for her. An incredible initiative enacted into law here in Panama which will hopefully pave the way to becoming an ecotourism driven destination and economy for the future.
I always say "The secret is the trees" but that's obvious. The real secret ingredient are all the guests that feel the jungle love and wonder of being surrounded by nature and enjoy being a part of it. So much so, they are willing to roll up their sleeves and get to work.
Planting trees is so much more than simply making a hole, dropping in a sapling, and filling it back in though that is a good start! Here in the lush eco system of a lowland humid forest, it's a lot easier to plant a tree than in a place like Colorado but we still have to nurture it along. Our planting season is from June through September. We make our own organic compost, have a sapling garden which we have grown from seed, and Ryan has created an efficient irrigation system which is powered by the sun and run from our own well.
All these green trees remind me of the holidays and the ritual of the Christmas Tree. Imagining the beautiful snowy backdrop of the mountains, powder days, and smelly thawing beards makes me really appreciative of living in Panama but the evergreen of pine trees commands respect of that harsh mountain climate. It takes a lot of effort to stay green!
Speaking of cold and snow, now that the holiday season has begun, have you thought about the after holiday time for you? Can you imagine your toes in the sand vs snow or ski boots?
Do you remember what April feels like? When you're ready for warm weather, warm water, sunshine, and a bathing suit? Well, dream no longer. We are here for you and April in Panama is all that. I know, I know, you are deep into the madness of the holidays and can't imagine planning a trip so....who you gonna call? ME! Winter Buster!
